How a Bay Area Tax Law Firm Reached #1 on Google in San Jose and Walnut Creek
A new brand, website and local SEO program took a Bay Area tax law firm to #1 on Google in San Jose and Walnut Creek. A tax-season ad push turned $5K into $194K of pipeline, and organic search now brings in so many inquiries (90 in nine weeks) that the firm turned the ads off.

01
Introduction
A tax law firm run by former IRS attorneys had decades of courtroom experience and almost no search visibility to show for it. Prospective clients searching for a tax attorney in San Jose or Walnut Creek found larger tax resolution shops first.
We rebuilt the firm’s brand and website, then ran local SEO, Google Business Profile optimization, a steady blog program and lead tracking for more than a year. The firm now ranks #1 on Google for its core local searches, a single tax-season ad campaign turned $5K into $194K of pipeline, and organic search alone now brings in more inquiries than the partners have capacity for.
02
About the client
Every partner at the firm worked as an adviser and litigator in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, with close to four decades of combined experience and hundreds of cases before the U.S. Tax Court. The firm handles IRS audits and tax litigation, tax resolution (offers in compromise, installment agreements, penalty abatement, levies), tax preparation and planning, business and nonprofit work, and trust and estate planning, from offices in San Jose, Walnut Creek and San Francisco.
03
The challenge
- At launch the site averaged position 33 in Google Search Console, page three or four for most searches, and earned roughly 150 to 180 organic clicks a month.
- The firm’s strongest selling point, inside experience at the IRS, was not front and centre, so it read like any other tax practice.
- Competitors with bigger marketing budgets owned the local searches for tax attorneys, IRS problems and tax resolution in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties.
- Three offices, but no consistent local presence for each city, and no regular publishing to capture the long tail of IRS and California tax questions people actually search.
- No reliable way to see which enquiries were coming in, from where, and what happened to them.
04
Project objectives
- Give the firm a brand that looks as established as the partners’ track record.
- Build a fast, easy-to-update website that leads with the former-IRS-counsel story and turns visits into consultation requests.
- Rank on the first page, then at the top, for the firm’s core local searches in San Jose and Walnut Creek.
- Grow organic reach month over month with content, and capture every lead in one place.
05
Branding
We designed a new wordmark identity: a confident serif name set in two stacked lines with a compact “LLP, Tax Law” descriptor, in a deep navy and slate blue palette with a clean sans serif for everything else. It reads as established and calm, which matters to someone who has just opened a letter from the IRS. The mark works in dark on light for the site header and in white for the footer, social profiles and documents.
06
Website design and development
The new WordPress site leads with the partners and one line that does the selling: former IRS counsel, now in your corner. Five practice areas each get a dedicated page, and every page ends in the same short consultation form.
- A service architecture built around how people search: audits and litigation, preparation and planning, resolution, business and nonprofit, and trust and estate planning.
- A consultation form with an optional, carrier-compliant SMS consent, so the team can follow up by text the same day.
- A Tax Center with refund tracking, IRS and state forms, record retention guides, a downloadable tax organizer and calculators, giving existing clients a reason to come back.
- Real client reviews pulled onto the homepage, an accessibility statement and toolbar, and a cookie consent banner.
07
Local SEO and Google Business Profile
Each office got its own location page, written around the searches that matter in that city, and the Google Business Profiles were cleaned up and kept active. Over the same period, Google Maps impressions rose 82%, from about 146 to 267 a month.
08
Content that answers real tax questions
Since September 2025 we have published 52 articles, about four a month, each answering a question a worried taxpayer actually types into Google: IRS bank levies, offers in compromise, penalty abatement, FBAR and foreign accounts, California estate and gift tax, FTB back taxes, and CDTFA sales tax audits. City guides for San Francisco, Oakland, Palo Alto and Milpitas extend the firm’s reach beyond its office addresses.
09
Lead generation: scale up, then switch off
Once the rankings were in place we added fuel at the moment it mattered most. A focused Google Search campaign ran through tax season, January to March 2026, on about $5,100 of ad spend: 864 clicks, 50 conversions at roughly $103 each, and 160 sales opportunities in the CRM worth a combined $194K in pipeline.
Then we pulled the ad spend. With the organic foundation carrying the volume on its own, paying for more leads stopped making sense. In the nine weeks to early October 2026 the firm received 90 inquiries, all organic: 80 from search and 10 from people who found the firm through ChatGPT. September was one of the best months on record, with 50 inquiries.
When we proposed relaunching ads, the partners declined: organic inquiries already exceed what the team can take on. Every form fill, call and text lands in one CRM, so each inquiry is tracked from first contact.
- About 60% of inquiries are IRS or state tax debt, collection and controversy cases, the firm’s core work.
- International reporting (FBAR and foreign-asset forms), estate and business planning make up most of the rest.
- Roughly three in every ten inquiries are a strong fit, and the firm closes one or two of those every week.

What comes next
The next phase targets the gaps we found in competitor research: a dedicated San Francisco location page, and deeper coverage of payroll tax and trust fund recovery penalties, IRS criminal investigations, worker classification and cryptocurrency tax, where other Bay Area firms still rank ahead.
